From Zero to MVP to innovation award

Being the only product designer and UI engineer in the team, I was responsible for defining, prototyping, front-end coding and testing the first MVP from zero. I was new to the financial crime risk management and due diligence topic but rapidly finished a training and interviewed experts to learn from their experience. We launched the web application in six months.

The highest contributors to this achievement were the successful use of design sprint that I advocated, planned and facilitated, and defining the key enablers of the platform discussed and incorporated during this sprint.

Remote Design Sprint

Design sprint is the best way to bring stakeholders together and define a problem statement in a collaborative way which would be the basis of the solution prototype. It is the most efficient and time saving method which is to learn from them while also facilitating their learning about the user needs and pain points from experts and customers and creating a collaborative work group to achieve testable prototype.

But companies are reluctant to book a five full days sprint for ~7 people across the board and this was the case in Themis also.

  • Reduced the five day sprint into three days to support ongoing services while covering the most important phases of defining problem statement, target segments, user journey map, ideation and prototyping.
  • Planned and facilitated a remote design sprint using Miro and its internal video conferencing tool with the main stakeholders and experts.
  • Created intoductory videos end of each day explaining what the team will tackle next day, helping sprint team to get prepared and to reduce ambiguity.
  • In 3 day sprint we have achieved:
    • Defining the problem statement
    • Defining the target audience and personas
    • Mapping the user journey
    • Sketched idea generation
    • Created prototype storyboard
Target audience profiles

Prototype and Testing

Following the storyboard we have voted on Day 3 of the design sprint, I have created various mock-ups of prototypes both in Adobe XD and HTML in parallel, to start testing with financial crime investigators.

As a result of testing I have changed some elements in the interface. Dropped the ideas that were not fully matured and confused the users. Added new MVP functions that the product management deemed important following recommendations

  • Added the ability to save a search to continue later or to keep a history
  • Added a whistleblower action button for users to report any criminal activity that they have witnessed that would be added to database (subject to validation)
  • Took feedback on the ability to drop selected media or internet sources to optimise investigation results or clear reporting from noise with logging the person initiated the dismissal and time

Visual Design

Brand conscious

Themis was already established as a company offering due diligence and financial crime risk reports on countries and individuals for its customers. It had gone through corporate branding and I utilised the existing colour palette for the MVP visual design, customising Bootstrap material design system.

This visual language and component system formed the basis of the full product spectrum have been used for the upcoming features.

Award winning platform

In 2023 Themis won pre-series A funding and in the next years upto 2025 Themis has been recognised with Series B certification twice as sustainable business.

Themis search platform won the RegTech Innovation award as top solution provider in Europe in 2024.
